Jones has some of the most comfortable rooms on campus. There are two different types of double rooms that new students may be placed in, and both of them are large enough to accommodate two students with ease. The wooden furniture is light and can be easily arranged into useful positions. Lofting your bed over a desk creates a cozy “working cubby.” The furniture can be easily arranged to fit sofas, tables, televisions, refrigerators, etc. Note: It’s not useful to have two TVs and no refrigerator. Contact your roommate before you arrive so you know what furniture and appliances everyone is bringing!

If you would rather not haul a sofa into your room, don’t worry, because each floor – in addition to the first floor of North and South - has a well-furnished lobby that can accommodate all of your lounging needs. There is also a kitchen on the first floor of Jones Central for those who want to experiment with the culinary arts. You can customize your room by sticking pictures or plastic hooks to the brick walls or pinning things to the bulletin board strips. Just don’t put holes in the wall or windows, or you’ll pay a fine! However you want to use your room, make it your own – you’ll be living there all year!

Student Maintenance Representative

Each college has its own Student Maintenance Representative (SMR) to help you with furniture arrangements or repairs in your room. This year, the Jones SMR is Ani Kunaparaju (avk3@rice.edu). During O-Week and the rest of the year, you can contact Ani by email or find him in his room for help with: bunking/debunking beds; general room repairs; moving heavy furniture; borrowing tools; borrowing the Jones Vacuum.

Every room comes with the following:

  • 2 dressers

  • 2 desks

  • 2 chairs

  • 2 small trash cans

  • 1 single-stream recycling bin

  • 2 towel racks, 2 mirrors, and shelf space in the closet

  • 2 beds (can be set at floor-level, waist-level, or bunked)

  • Telephone outlet

  • Ethernet hookup (though the wireless Internet usually works just fine)

Jones Rooms:

  • A: Standard Double Most new students will be placed in standard doubles, which are 12’ x 16’ with an entire wall of windows.

  • B: Freshman Corner Double (FCD) Nice corner rooms on North and South are known as Freshman Corner Doubles. At roughly 13.5’ x 13.5’, these are slightly smaller than standard doubles, but the huge closet space makes up for that fact.
